I really enjoy visiting the gardens in the late spring/early summer. This is a free admission garden. It is 2.5 acres and The major emphasis perennials but there are many other plantings including annuals and woody plants. The landscaping is beautiful with my favorite being a large pond/watergarden and wetland area. It is also nice to be able to see some of the newer plants and how they do in a northern area. Parking is limited on the street as this garden is part of the University of Wisconsin.

Allen is a nice little garden on the UW campus. It is divided into garden rooms, which include: shade garden, edible garden, Italian garden, traditional English border and lawn, rock garden, water garden, and New American garden. They have a lot of nice plantings of perennials, shrubs, bulbs, annuals, and some trees, all well-cared for and artfully arranged. The rock garden and shade gardens are particularly nice, and they have a pretty decent collection of herbaceous peonies. Some plants are labelled, but many are not. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
