We hiked the two miles of wooded trails in the spring through more than 100 acres of native Texas landscape. The dogwood and red bud tree were in bloom as were many wild flowers. Many of trees and other plants along the trails were identified with markers. Several historic buildings depicting life in East Texas in the mid 1800's are located around the gardens. The East Texas Arboretum was created by a volunteer group who created the non-profit organization which now runs and operates it. We were delighted to learn that it is open to the public daily 7 days a week, with few exceptions. In the Spring & Summer it is open from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm. We could easily see why it is such a popular place for weddings and other events. We learned the East Texas Arboretum is supported financially by annual memberships, corporate sponsors, grants and the revenue from two or more annual fund raising events. A lovely place to enjoy a taste of nature and history.

Full of native plants, an historic home, herb gardens, pavillon for a meeting or reunion complete with picnic tables. There is a nature walk and a small gift shop. The bath facilities are very clean. It is located on a hill and there is always a nice breeze. This is a great place to go if you don't want to walk a lot or to take small children where they can run about and you can easily keep up with them. There also is a playground and darling playhouse. We took a small group of special needs students and had a wonderful time and a great picnic lunch.
