The South Middle River Community Garden is unique because it's about COMMUNITY. A great project that started as a field of weeds. A citizen initiative to create something beautiful and as a torch passed on from person to person, year to year, many struggles and problems surpassed, motivation, a clear mandate and PUSH FORWARD, hard work and volunteers, has made it what it is today.
Congratulations to past and present civic activists to keep this "bird and wildlife sanctuary" going. No admission charge.

A different kind of place reminiscent of a kinder more gentle period in this great country's history.

The individual gardens within the community gardens are planted by those living in the South Middle River Community wanting to create a garden but may not have the room to do so where they live, or just like to hang out in an area where there are many others with similar interests.

This is truely a community garden. The space for the gardens is provided by Church of The Intercession Episcopal, just next door on the other side of the parking lot.

How it works; A small parcel of land within the gardens is dolled out to those living in the South Middle River Community wanting to grow almost any type of garden they wish. They can fence it in if they wish to, or not.
What's amazing about the place is the variety of plants, bushes and vegetables grown there. Several of the plants I have listed here at Dave's originated at these Community Gardens.
There are heavily mulched walkways that meander throughout the gardens where you can view the many beautiful plants and bushes planted by the individuals that have planted these gardens. You are always accompanied by wild birds, butterflies and other assorted wildlife.
Usually on any given visit I will find some of the gardeners sitting around under shade providing trees at one of the many area's there for this purpose. Usually they are reading the morning papers over a thermos filled with hot coffee. On several occasions I have stopped to chat with them.
Oh yeah, they do allow you to take cuttings.
