I used to love shopping at New England Nurseries for their large selection of gardening tools, pest control, and one of the biggest section of pots (containers) I have ever seen!. Their hardscaping is also quite good, and they have many trees, shrubs, and perennials, though nothing terribly unusual or rare.

Their annuals leave a bit to be desired, especially the shade annuals.

But their service is the reason I will never shop there again. Early last spring, I purchased an exquisite Cercis candadensis 'Forest Pansy,' and had it delivered, and I planted it myself. Before we left, I asked about the guarantee and was told I had a year, which is typical of all nurseries in the area, even Home Depot.

This spring, my tree had not yet bloomed, when all the other redbuds in the area were bursting with blooms. Also, the bark looked very pale. So I called customer service about a week before the year expired, and I asked to put a freeze on their guarantee while I monitored the tree a little longer. I was then told that they only guarantee trees and shrubs for 90 days unless THEY plant them. That's not what I'd been told when I purchased the tree, and I was furious. You can't completely judge the health of a tree or shrub until it's been through a winter; 90 days is not nearly enough time! I had been misled, and had I known they only guarantee for 90 days, I would have made my purchase elsewhere.

When we dug up the tree, it was immediately obvious why it had died. The rootball was 100% clay. There's no way those roots could have pushed their way out of it.

Maybe New England Nurseries didn't know the trees came packed in clay (probably from below the Mason Dixon line), but the person who worked with me should have clearly stated the difference in guarantee (that the tree had one year only if they planted it for me).

I find this nursery hit or miss for me. They do seem to have very healthy plant material. Sometimes I have found a good selection of fairly priced perennials. Annuals on the other hand have left me cold. Seasonal plants, like their Mums this year, were about average. Prices seem to have gone up a lot in recent years. Especially on shrubs. It may be that everyone has, I haven't compared that well. Overall, it is on my list of places to check out when I am looking for something.

This is one of my favorite local nurseries! They carry unusual perennials (including many rock garden plants, hostas, ornamental grasses, etc), unusual annuals for containers and tropical plants that are now in vogue for containers. In addition to the healthy plants (at good prices) they have garden statues, pond supplies, containers, and garden supplies. In spring they have a great selection of seeds and seed starting supplies. In their greenhouse you can buy house plants year round.

Wonderful selection of trees and shrubs - especially evergreens and interesting dwarf conifers. Decent selection of annuals and perenials.
