Hi, my flowering almond bushes have a substantial amount of dead branches and leaves (about 50% each one). There is also some sap looking stuff on them. Is this normal for this type of bush, or is this some kind of disease? There is some new growth on them also though.

I'm not an expert, but I just planted 3 flowering almonds this spring. After they flowered, the branches had a lot of dried up flowers and were pretty unsightly. I just ran my fingers down the branches to remove the dry stuff, and now the same places are growing new leaves. They are filling in nicely, but seem to have more leaves on the upper branches, which may be normal for the shape of this shrub.
