Is it possible to put too much seed down when starting a new lawn?

Yes--I would suggest you follow the directions on the seed package. As with any plants, if you seed too heavily and all or most of them sprout, you will have too much competition for available nutrients and water. The crowding can also cause lack of air flow which can lead to problems with fungus and/or mold problems.
