I have a large Knockout Rose bush that has been blooming most of the summer and still has lots of blooms. I'm wondering how to prepare it for winter--the shape is really uneven--can I trim it? How? When? Should I put some compost on it before it freezes (Missouri)? Cut off the spent blooms, or not? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not sure of your zone, but if it is 5 or higher, they don't really need protection. If they are in an extra windy exposed area and you feel the need to protect them, you can hill some dirt around the bases and cover the tops with evergreen boughs or burlap. They actually are more hardy if not pruned, especially not heavily,in the fall.In the spring just lightly prune to shape and remove any damaged branches.
