I found these cuttings in the trash at the nursery. They bleed a white sap when I take a leaf off.

Is that a rubber tree (ficus elastica)? Bright and neat plant. So have you got them potted up yet? Lol.

No, not potted up yet. I'll look at the rubber plant family but it's drffinately not that. It alos has a tiny little pricker at the leaf axis. More like a needle point or tiny thorn.

I thought it might be Peperomia obtusifolia (baby rubber tree), but the leaves don't quite match....keep looking...grin

It may be a Ficus. Can you get any more info, or get a photo of a mature plant at the nursery?

I found a ficus "Green Island" that resembles it. Google it to get a few more pics...

http://www.horticulturist.com/mastermag/greenisland.htm

I don't even know if it's ficus, but it looks ficus. Hey, does it feel ficus? This sounds strange :)

A thought. Wouldn't the nursery where you found the cuttings know the name of the plant?

If it's like some of the nurseries I've been to here in Florida ... there's a 50/50 chance of someone knowing the correct identity. I've come across a lot of nursery workers who don't have a clue. :-)

The leaf is thick like a rubber plant but too small. It grew tall fast and straight, that's why they were clipping it. And the secound picture shows that thorn that comes out at leaf base.

It's got some characteristics of a holly.

Hey Wormfood, that "thorn-like" thing at the "leaf base" (bottom of petiole) is called a Stipule, and is common in Ficus species.

plantladylin, I'm sorry I didn't look at that picture better. It's a comparison photo and I think that is it.
I'm afraid to go to the nursery to ask, I spend too much money there. I'm afraid to go to Lowe's too. Too much great stuff.

Well, I went there, and got away with $24 worth of goodies. The closest we could come to those clippings was Bay Laurel. I'm not convinced.

Glad, or apologize for the 24 bux worth of goodies, but that doesn't look like bay laurel to me....but I could be wrong....grin

I will never steal anything ever again, so far it's cost me $24 and I still don't know the name. Plus, I feel like I look guilty.
Ok, next time I go there, I'll just say "I stole these from you're trash bin and can't find the name for them".
What do you think?
( and they do feel like a ficus, rubbery instead of stiff like bay )

Plants in trash cans are fair game.....why not just say you saw the cuttings in the trash can and want to know what they are. You don't have to say you snagged a couple of them....really....grin

If that is bay laurel, I'll eat my hat. Its big and very chewy( my hat that is) and there's no way I'm going to eat it.
In fact if it's bay lauel, I'll put my hat in the stew with some real bay laurel.

Definitely not Peperomia.

For there to be cuttings at the nursery, it seems there should be a larger plant.
