Mitzifrommonti Monticello, IA November 09, 2009 12:22 PM	We have beautiful wild flowers growing in the roadside ditches near us. I would like to get some of them growing in the ditch in front of our farm house. We have gathered some of the seeds to scatter. Is it best to scatter them in the autumn or in the spring? If in the autumn, is it too late to do it now?

I'm not intending to hijack your thread.. I would like to know if the ground needs to be 'prepared' before sowing wildflower seed? I have always been under the impression that you could just toss it out and it will take root.. but that could be a sad misconception and I really prefer not to waste seed.
themoonhowl Prairieville, LA (Zone 9a) November 13, 2009 04:33 PM	Considering that the plant drops its' seeds without regard to the seasons, it should stand to reason that you can sow wildflower seeds at this time. In a ditch, there is probably no need to do any prep work. If the soil is covered by thick grass, you may need to remove/thin the grass to give the seeds a fighting chance.
1lisac Liberty Hill, TX (Zone 8a) November 13, 2009 06:45 PM	If the ground is prepared (cleared and raked, not more then an inch deep) then you have a better chance of higher germination. The seeds need to be in contact with the soil. Are the flowers blooming now? My seeding book says that you are past the fall sowing window for zones 5-6 but it couldn't hurt to try. You might want to save some of the seeds to sow in spring just in case. Lisa
