I have what I thought was old fashioned hollyhock, the blooms look like it ,but the leaves look like "hands" with notched "fingers". All the pictures I find have leaves that look totally different. The flowers are deep pink, maroon color.the stems and seed pods are covered with tiny thorny hairs. It grows very tall, and reseeds yearly.

Can you post some pictures? Pics of leaves, flowers, seed pods would all be helpful.

Please post pictures. It sounds like it may be a mallow/hardy hibiscus. Hibiscus moscheutos

No, definitely not a hollyhock. I think you've got Hibiscus cannabinus http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/60020/

There was a similar post a few days ago. The two suggestions were H cannabinus, as Ecrane suggested or Hibiscus Radiatus
