What's this plant?: SOLVED: what type of grass is this?

zotmahru Pensacola, FL November 07, 2009 03:59 PM	Trying to figure out to do with the plant this winter in Northwest Florida. 2 maybe 3 years old. Has grown nicely but this past spring to early summer it kinda layed down from it's upright position.Never could get it standing back up. It's held up now with a piece of rope attached to our deck. Doesn't seem like a slow grower so we were wondering should we cut it back to about 6" or so during the fall or what? View Larger

We cut ours back in late January, after a freeze. We cut the clump back to about 6-8 inches and after the last frost date we fertilize it. Every 2 or 3 years, we use a sharp shovel and remove some of the new growth around the outside edge. The next year, we usually divide the clump by 1/3 to 1/2 its size. This helps to keep the grass more upright.

themoonhowl Prairieville, LA (Zone 9a) November 08, 2009 09:56 AM	Altagardener, I will have to have mine checked out, now. I have three large plants that were all labelled Giant Fountain Grass. I guess the tags got mixed at the nursery. Or, it is just me not seeing the picture properly....grin. Oh well, if I get one out of three plants right I have a better average than some pro baseball players....lol Zotmahru, the link has pictures of Miscanthus grass also.

themoonhowl Prairieville, LA (Zone 9a) November 08, 2009 12:27 PM	Hey Zot, the cut back info is still pertinent....I have Zebra Miscanthus and we treat it the same way. Glad you have a solid ID.

Thanks again and have a nice relaxing winter season (like we get much of a winter in a 9a zone). Keep an eye on Ida down in the Yucatan. Think alta has the fireplace going up there in Calgary?
