I just bought a Bouganvillea in a 5 gallon container about a week ago. My success with others in our yard (trying to do 4 along our back fence) has not been spectacular. Am now wondering with this new one - - might I just put the whole plant -pot and all- into the ground? This would not disturb the roots. So, will wait to see what comments I get before I do anything. Thanks. Pat

I have had trouble with them, too, so I can empathize. I wouldn't put a plastic pot in the ground. They do have delicate roots and don't like to be moved, I know that much. Try gently cutting the pot away from the plant, rather than trying to get it out? That's what I've done with other plants. Good luck, and I hope someone else has more tips.

If the root ball is fairly firm and the soil and roots not loose and spilling, you can lift the plant from the pot and gently wrap the root ball in a sheet of newspaper. That will hold the roots together while you plant it, and the paper will degrade in the ground. Bougs don't mind having their roots a bit constricted. Keep the soil just moist, not wet, until established. They are fairly drought tolerant and do not require a large amount of fertilizer.
