Gardening Questions: How should I overwinter perennials in pots?

CrabgrassCentrl New Milford, CT October 31, 2009 12:44 PM	I assume that being in pots, as opposed to in the ground, might make them more vulnerable to freezing. What kind of temperatures, light, etc. is a good spot? I do have cats who chew so I'd like to keep them either in a basement room or in our detached garage, but both are pretty dark, and of course the garage is unheated.
themoonhowl Prairieville, LA (Zone 9a) October 31, 2009 12:49 PM	Your basement, as close to a window as possible with some extra light in the form of a grow-light bulb, if you want to keep them active, otherwise, just cut them back after the first cold snap and move them into the basement. Water when dry, do not over water or let them stay wet and they should be fine til spring. Just remember to gradually re-introduce them to sunlight in the spring.
threegardeners North Augusta, ON (Zone 5a) October 31, 2009 01:00 PM	I always "plant" the pots in the garden. They always come through just fine...as long as they are hardy to your zone.
