I planted a breath of heaven in March. It did well for a few months, and now all of a sudden is rather brown and sad looking. Is it dead? If so, any ideas as to why? It gets afternoon sun and good water. The smaller one next to it held the same fate.
I am assuming it is not just going dormant for the winter. Any help would be much appreciated!

No, they don't go dormant for the winter, mine are nice and green now and stay that way all winter. My first guess would be a watering issue of some sort--maybe too much, maybe too little. Your soil looks pretty wet in the picture but maybe that's just the lighting. You might also check around the base or give the plant a gentle tug and see if it's had its roots chewed off--gophers and voles can both chew off enough roots that a plant will all of a sudden die like that. Around here the gophers typically aren't active as much in the summer & fall, but I have had some trouble with voles recently.
