I have tried to cut back lavender in the past and it has not recovered. How do I prune a large shrub without killing it?

I typically prune mine right after they finish blooming. The trick with lavender is that you can't cut them back too hard--if you cut back into the older woody growth they often won't come back, so in order to keep them looking nice you really have to prune every year. It's not one of those plants that can be cut to the ground to rejuvenate it after it's been let go for a while as you can do with many other things.
