While hiking on a trail in central ohio we came across a TREE with these great looking seed pods that look like lanterns. They were green and resemble a starfruit with 3 segments when viewed from above. From the side they are kinda oval with 3 distinct points at the bottom(coresponding to the 3 segments) Each pod is about 1.5 inches long, green and has 1 seed that rattles around inside. The area was well drained...about 30 feet uphill from a river but certainly in the valley. The pods blended well with the leaves and we had to jump to reach the lowest branches. I didn't really pay that close of attention to how big the tree was , but if memory serves 20-30 ft. we have been searching high and low on the internet and are coming up blank... So what the heck is it?
Thanks in advance!
Krupp, it is often difficult to make a positive ID with a picture, but exceptionally hard to do so without a picture. Your best chance is to post your description on the Plant ID forum and hope that someone there recognizes it from your description.
