I don't especially like the small pincushion shaped mounds of mums that are so prevalent for sale this time of year. I would love to have some big, tall mums like I remember as a kid that would grow and spread.
I have no idea where to find them. I looked on line and the one that I found was out of stock for the year. I was hoping I could plant one now. Is anyone familiar with the type of mums I am thinking about?
Not necessarily round "football" mums, maybe more "spider-y"?
Maybe this type needs to be planted in spring instead?
Hi JulieQ, My wife has some big, tall old time mums. They haven't started blooming yet. When they do I'll send you a picture of them. If they are what you want I'll be glad to save you some seed.
From what I've learned so far. The common mums if not pinched back will grow taller with large flowers. They also need to be thinned and disbudded (removing some side shoots and leaving one bud per shoot). I haven't tried it yet, but do intend to do so. I too don't care for the short bushy type with the tiny flowers. I hope this helps.
flowerjen, thanks for the link. They do have some gorgeous mums, just like I remember! I especially like the bronze and the burgandy tall (36") ones.
I guess I don't really remember seeing them for sale in the spring and I assumed that I could get them now, like the cushion mums you see everywhere. I can definitely wait for spring, but just was hoping...
Jim41, please post a picture when yours start blooming.
Julie, I wondered this same thing but did find this source from whom I have ordered. I have since learned these guys have moved up here to Oregon. I hope to try to tour their nursery while they bloom. Good Luck!!!! Joann
