Landscaping: Japanese Maple

AHRicard Ludlow, MA (Zone 5b) September 19, 2009 03:51 PM	Hi, I have this Japanese maple in a pot I live in Massachusetts. I was wondering if I have to bring it in the house come winter time. My neighbor told me to burry the pot in the ground for winter. Don't want it to die so any help I will greatly appreciate. View Larger
themoonhowl Prairieville, LA (Zone 9a) September 20, 2009 12:08 AM	While most Japanese Maples are cold hardy to zone 5, a Japanese Maple in a pot will not survive freezing temperatures. The roots are too exposed to the cold and there is not the benefit of the ambient ground temperature to help the roots survive. digger9083 Dahlonega, GA September 22, 2009 10:02 PM	I have a lot of J P's and I bury all my pots in the compost pile . I pack the compost between the pots .My compost has broken down to almost dirt , so no extra heat in there . I'm in Z-7-a. Don't take the tree in , it needs to have a cold period and go dormant, just bury it . You can go to the Japanese maple forum to get good info too .
themoonhowl Prairieville, LA (Zone 9a) September 22, 2009 11:38 PM	Digger, AH isn't a subscriber. AH, if you want to sink them into the ground in their pots, do so in a protected area and you may want to make a sandwich-board type A-Frame over them to keep the ice and snow off of them.

I was going to sell a bunch of the seedlings this last year , but was tied up Every weekend ,so held over . When these are gone and my grafted ones are planted , I'm through . Too many other things to do . digger

Have all I want of everything still in buckets . Several different magnolias , paperbark maple , Franklenia , mohawk viburnum , on &on . again , where is prairiville ? D

Getting on and off I-12 closer into Baton Rouge can be a real pain....anytime, not just rush hours....grin...and I have a back road from my home to Walker. Any idea on time?
