Hi, I have this Japanese maple in a pot I live in Massachusetts. I was wondering if I have to bring it in the house come winter time. My neighbor told me to burry the pot in the ground for winter. Don't want it to die so any help I will greatly appreciate.

While most Japanese Maples are cold hardy to zone 5, a Japanese Maple in a pot will not survive freezing temperatures. The roots are too exposed to the cold and there is not the benefit of the ambient ground temperature to help the roots survive. Below is a link with further info for you.

I have a lot of J P's and I bury all my pots in the compost pile . I pack the compost between the pots .My compost has broken down to almost dirt , so no extra heat in there . I'm in Z-7-a. Don't take the tree in , it needs to have a cold period and go dormant, just bury it . You can go to the Japanese maple forum to get good info too .

Digger, AH isn't a subscriber. AH, if you want to sink them into the ground in their pots, do so in a protected area and you may want to make a sandwich-board type A-Frame over them to keep the ice and snow off of them.

I've had a JP, pretty exposed, in my front yard here in Wellesley for the past couple of years and it's thrived.
(Sorry, I can't find the camera to computer cord for a pic.)

Japanese Maples will do fine in the ground in zone 5, it is potted JP's that will have a problem.

Isn't it amazing how quickly a "few grafts" can become so time consuming? I have 4 JPs but about 2 dozen that I would love to have....DH just says....."we are walking, not stopping, walking forward"....lol

We will be through there next Wed. What's up on I -12 to have coffee, I'll bring you some small bloodgoods . I didn't know they would do good that far south and need acid soil .

That would be too kind of you. The WALKER exit off of I-12 would be the easiest for both of us. Getting on and off I-12 closer into Baton Rouge can be a real pain....anytime, not just rush hours....grin...and I have a back road from my home to Walker. Any idea on time?
