Flowers: Lilies in your garden

echoes Southern MB Canada September 10, 2009 09:06 PM	Lilies are probably my favourite flowers in my mixed perennial gardens. They are not difficult to grow and add so much colour. I garden in Canada in zone 2b or 3. The Lilium genus has hybrids and species to extend bloom for a few months of the gardening season. I will share some of my photos of lilies with you here so that all members can see them and add their own pics of lilies that they grow. This first one is a LA lily called Aladdin Sun. LA lilies are a cross between longiflorum and Asiatic lilies. I get my lilies now from reputable growers, to be sure that I get healthy and true to name bulbs. I love the selection of both the older, nearly lost from the garden varieties, to the newest lilies around. Then there is her website, with some of the most amazing lilies currently undergoing trials. It's just a real pick me, especially in the middle of winter. Have fun shopping lilypon ;)

By planting the different varieties, you can see lilies for 2- 3 months! I love looking at lily's I however severely dislike the smell of them - plus I have hayfever and lilys seem to make it worse :(.

They call it their "Strawberries and Cream" collection (Asiatics) and it took my breath away. Did I order it? Absolutely, but I'm not telling how many. You'd think I was crazy (I think I am too). They're supposed to be shipped in October and I can't wait to see what they'll look like next spring. First time lily-grower here. Wish me luck! Judy View Larger

I got their website from the BHG site. This is the first time I've ordered from them. Those colors were so gorgeous I couldn't resist. Will definitely post photos next spring. Judy

I bought that mix before I knew anything about Asiatics. Had to look up the difference between Asiatics and Orientals and was a little disappointed that that Asiatics are not as fragrant. However, they are said to be a little smaller than the Orientals and that's more what I was looking for. Pirl, I came across that picture of your lilies under the tree a week or so ago and saved it in my "garden ideas" folder on my desktop. Hope you don't mind. I have a huge oak tree in the middle of my back yard too. Need ideas bad! Thanks for letting me "borrow." I am just starting, as I have said, and have a blank slate before me. Whole garden photos are so helpful ... or at least whole garden "rooms." Judy

If I had it to do over again (sounds like a good name for a thread) I'd probably have gone with all named varieties instead of buying two mixes at different times but I do love it when they're all in bloom even if it's not "color harmony", which I dearly love. JudyinGA Newnan, GA (Zone 7b) September 23, 2009 11:32 PM	Your garden room under the tree is so pretty and inviting and the mix of colors just makes it more interesting. It's probably even more stunning now that you have added more. Since I'm so new, you don't know how proud I am just to be able to name most of the plants you have ... and they are some of my favorites. Isn't that ajuga on the edge of the planting? I didn't know it would grow in the sun. Here I think it's a shade plant. Also think I see a castor bean plant in that urn. Love those! "If I had it to do over again ..." That really would be a good name for a new thread. :-) I'm sure some of you who are experienced might want to start over with parts of your gardens if you had known then what you do now. I have never ordered lilies before, much less a mix, and I have no idea if they will tell me the names of the different colored lilies or what. If they don't, it will be a lesson learned, but I still think the mix will be beautiful if I can get it to grow. Thanks for the good luck wishes. I'll probably need it. Judy
pirl Southold, NY (Zone 7a) September 24, 2009 07:00 AM	Thanks, Judy. Yes, it is ajuga at the edge and it was Castor Bean Plant. I threw the seeds to that one over the edge of a fence. I'll take a photo when the sun comes up - wow! I even started a thread about "If I had it to do over...": http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1041379/ They probably will tell you the names of the lilies but if they don't you can always write to them, with your order number, and ask. They're good with things like that.
