Last summer I planted Dianthus "firewitch" in the border and the plants survived being covered with 3-4 feet of snow. This summer they have been blooming like mad but now the new buds have withered petals and they don't open. The foliage still looks great-- no rot, discoloration or anything like that. I recently put bark mulch in the bed and am wondering if that might be the problem. Has anyone had this happen to their beautiful "firewitch"?
You're lucky your firewitch bloomed as long as it did. Mine only bloom for a couple weeks in June. I've had them for several years. I think they're just tired, "too pooped to pop". I wouldn't worry about it. They put on a nice show for you.
Since the Dianthus Cheddar Pinks only bloom in late spring/early summer, maybe their time was up even though they still had some buds formed. I wouldn't think the mulch would cause a problem unless it was holding too much moisture? I just pull up the tops of them and cut them off with a scissors and hopefully it'll rebloom after that. I just bought a couple Firewitch and planted it last Sept. I didn't get such a great show in them - yet. I'm glad yours did well for you!
My Cheddar Pinks bloom again in the fall as long as I deadhead them after the spring bloom. My Firewitch are blooming off and on since I planted them in late spring, but there haven't been just covered in blooms.
